Harriet Walton Wing scrapbooks, 1828-1880 (bulk 1828-1835)

The Harriet Walton Wing Scrapbooks contain poems, school essays, and other writings by Harriet Walton and her young school friends. The poems are signed by the authors and dated 1828-1831. Essays up to 1834 were probably written in Montpelier, Vermont. A brief entry, dated September 26, 1834, was written at the Troy Female Seminary. Places identified are Montpelier, Middlebury, and other communities in Vermont. Also included are notes written years later by Harriet Walton Wing concerning many of her friends who contributed to the volumes. Finally, there are obituaries, particularly for her two sons, Edgar Murray Wing (d. 1864) and George Henry Wing (d. 1868), both of whom served in the Civil War.

Harriet Newhall Walton (1815-1887) was born in Montpelier, Vermont. During the year 1834-1835, she attended Troy Female Seminary. In 1835 she married Halsey Rogers Wing. The Wing family came to Glens Falls, N.Y. in 1841. Harriet Walton Wing was President of the Warren County (N.Y.) Sanitary Commission during the Civil War.
